Learn How to Earn A Solid Living with Your Creative Services

Say goodbye to the term "starving artist" and say hello to a creative business that turns a hearty profit.

If you love working on projects using your creative talents, but just haven't figured out how to charge what you are worth or make money with your creative talents, don't despair!  The "business side" of creativity shouldn't cause you to want to give up.

Here's the painful reality:

Most artists and creative people focus on what they do best - being creative - but tend to ignore or set aside the "business side."

Creative talent alone won't bring you great clients or earn you enough money to pay your bills, let alone enough money to pay yourself.

99% of creative thinkers avoid dealing with the business side of their business because they don't like it, they're afraid of it, or they feel guilty for charging money for their creative talents.

All of my creative clients felt this way about contracts, cash flow, and fees when the first got into the business world, and you probably do, too!

I understand what it's like to be in business, and how difficult it can be to deal with the "business side" of a creative business - especially when you don't enjoy sales, marketing, fee setting, proposal writing, or business management and are using the wrong methods to reach your financial goals.

The Straight Truth About Business

Let me be totally straight with you - business ain't easy no matter what you do, but it's even harder in a creative business because you are personally attached to what you do AND because you are usually working to sell something for which there is no concrete "value."

It's not like selling a car, where you can easily determine the worth of the vehicle.  Anyone can go online and know how much a car is worth based on model, age, condition, and a variety of other specific items.  But, when you are selling decorative painting services, planning an event, or staging a house how do you measure the value of your creativity for that project?

Well, I can tell you one thing for sure,
if you are charging by the hour, then you are absolutely, unequivocally hurting yourself and your chances of getting paid what you really deserve.

Why You're Not Making More Money

I can assure you that no matter what you've been told, and even if prospects have said, "You're too expensive!" the reason you're not making more money is not because your fees are too high.

Let me prove it to you.

Think of someone in your industry whom you know is making tons of money and has lots of clients no matter how badly the economy is doing.  I bet that guy is charging more than you.

So, if he's charging more than you, and he has lots of clients then how is it your prospects are saying you are too expensive?

I'll tell you why:

YOUR PERCEIVED VALUE IS TOO LOW.

Perceived value is how much the client THINKS you are worth which has a dramatic impact on how much the client is willing to pay for your services.

Perceived value isn't determined by you, or anyone selling any thing for that matter.  It's determined by the people to which you sell and their perceptions.

Don't get discouraged.

Just because your prospects' perceived value isn't determined by you, doesn't mean you don't have any influence on that perception.

You just have to learn:

  • how to find out what your potential customers want

  • why they want it

  • how they believe it will affect them once they have it

There are specific questions and ways to determine this information, regardless of what creative item or service you are selling, and the methods to get the information are really very easy once you know how!

What Others Say About Me

Creative professionals such as faux finishers, muralists, interior decorators, writers, event planners, fitness trainers, photographers, home stagers, videographers, wedding consultants, graphic designers, and fine artists have all worked with me, participated in my educational seminars, and used my learning tools to help transform their creative talents into successful businesses.

Just read about their successes for yourself:

I am so thrilled not just because I GOT THE CLIENT but more so because you really helped me understand that VALUE is not just what you offer to a client but VALUE has everything to do with how you PRESENT yourself to the client! You can only offer value if you feel you are truly "valuable".  I'm giddy with exhilaration!

I FINALLY GET IT!

I will never undervalue my abilities again. It was truly my GOOD KARMA and GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE FOUND YOU!  You can use my e-mail for a testimonial.  I would even fly to a seminar and talk about how absolutely fabulous you are!

A zillion "thank yous" are not enough.

Kirstin Carey's book is one of the best resources I have read to help me create a successful pricing and networking campaign for my business. I bought this book right before meeting with a potential client. By simply applying the principles of listening to the client, asking questions and clarifications from the client, and letting the client tell me what her needs were (all of which I learned from Kirstin's book), my client, of her own accord, raised my fee 50%! Her statement was, "When I realized what I was asking you to do, I realized I needed to pay you more." Thank you, Kirstin!

I just signed my biggest contract ever – for a Complete Production Wedding!  It’s my most inclusive (and most expensive!) service package and I only have you to thank.  My new attitude, proposal write-up, and fee system reinforced my professional image.  Now, I’m ready to play in the big leagues!  Thank you for helping me earn more money, save my clients stress, and make my work more enjoyable.  There’s nothing better in life than loving what you do
(and getting paid for it!).

Kirstin is not only a knowledgeable, industry-savvy consultant and dynamite speaker, she is also a confidence-builder. I have attended one of her seminars and am currently part of her ongoing monthly tele-seminars.

As an added benefit of participating in her tele-seminars, she offered a free thirty-minute phone consultation. I took advantage of her generosity because I was quaking in my boots about a proposal for an important mural commission. My conversation with her helped me realize that I was far undercharging for my art.  She gave me advice, selling tips and the confidence to more than double what I would have charged for the work. I was able to quote a figure over $6,000 to a client without a qualm. This is the largest paycheck I've ever gotten! Thank you, Kirstin!

"I
already used your advice regarding fact gathering questions last week
on a prospect and it went really smoothly...
I got the job and it is a relatively big one for me ($3,600)!  Thanks.

"Thanks for an amazing talk today at Manhattan Producers Alliance. Truly inspiring & it has really opened up a way for me to move forward with a particular client I'd been having issues with, as well as giving ideas for the future.

Your approach is spot on & had great resonance.... Much of what you said made me think, 'Of course! Why didn't I think of that?'"

The concepts you need to know to increase your bottom line aren't difficult, you just have to learn them and use them.

It really is that simple.

"Your guidance has helped me immensely! You have been there for me 100% - especially in times of great need or sudden emergencies. More importantly your ability to GIVE unconditionally is what makes you stand out in your field.  Let's face it... I have called you in times when I was in a pinch - needing advice in an instant. You have ALWAYS been there guiding me and showing me the way.

Because of you:

I set higher standards for my business.

My negotiating skills improved.

I once feared public speaking...I now speak effortlessly to large groups.

I implemented a national training program - something I was not sure
how to structure on my own.

I realize my value, never compromise my integrity and set boundaries.

If someone asked me in one sentence to describe Kirstin Carey,
I would tell them: 'she's an incredibly smart woman with a ton of talent,
a mind for business and a heart of gold!'"

You Can Achieve Creative Business Success, Too!

Don't you want a business that lets you do what you love and get paid for it?  Imagine being able to do what you love - what you were meant to do - and having an even, continuous cash flow.  You look at your business bank statement and you have enough money to pay all of your bills easily, including enough money to cut yourself a regular, healthy check.

Wow.  Wouldn't that feel great?

It does feel great, and you should know what it feels like.  You deserve to love what you do and get paid for your talent and creativity. It's a gift. You should open it and enjoy it!

Who Am I?

My name is Kirstin Carey and I've been presenting programs and consulting people for over 14 years helping them do what they enjoy AND make money while doing it!  I understand how difficult business can be, as I own my own business and I'm married to a "serial entrepreneur" who is continually starting, growing, managing and selling businesses.  So I get to live through Tom's business ups and downs, too.

In the beginning of my career, I worked mostly with corporations and companies to help them and their employees market and sell more effectively.  Over the years, I was approached by a photographer, an interior decorator, a graphic designer, and a muralist to help them.  Each person wanted to make more money with their creative services, but was struggling with many of the same business issues.

It was obvious there was a huge void in business education and business learning tools specifically designed for creative folks.  So, I created programs and educational support items to fill this gaping need.

Now, most of my focus is on the needs of the creative business owner.
